Orange airtime credit will expire every 2 months, however incoming calls can be received for up to 8 months. If the credit is not used in the 2 months, it is lost. If the Orange is not reloaded at least once every 8 months then the SIM card and accompanying phone number will expire.
If you did not purchase a preactivated SIM your France cell phone number will be dynamically assigned to your cellular phone once you arrive in France by simply following the instructions outlined below:

Customer service for your France Orange prepaid SIM card is available 24 hr./day by dialing 722 at any time from your France cellular phone or 0892 701 722 from a landline phone in France.
*You will need to snap out the thumbnail sized France SIM card along the perforated edge of its holder and then insert the France SIM card into your international cell phone with the gold contacts of the France SIM card facing the metal contacts of your international cellular phone.
**When calling overseas from the United States to your France cellular phone number callers will need to dial 011 followed by the country code 33 and then your France cell phone number, omitting the first 0 (zero). To call abroad from your France cell phone simply dial 00 followed by the country code and phone number.
To credit your France SIM card with additional airtime, you will need to purchase Orange recharge cards. These scratch cards may be in purchased in 10 Euro denominations at most convenience stores, tabac shops and petrol stations throughout France.
Orange recharge cards are available at face value and so a 15 Euro airtime voucher will cost you 15 Euro and subsequently will credit your Orange SIM card for 15 Euro.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to use this SIM to make calls back to the US from any country except France. From zone 1 you can make international calls to any other country in zone 1, or to France, but in zone 2 the only international calls you can make are back to France.
